Double fault: Challengers is as bad in the bedroom as it is on the tennis court
Mon, 06 May 2024 08:02:33 GMT
Critics might have fallen for Luca Guadagninoâs erotic tennis romp but itâs a vapid string of disappointing choices
I have spent the week and a half since seeing Challengers on the brink of throwing a racquet-trashing, expletive-scattering, McEnroe-style tantrum. Is Hawkeye working? Did they not see it? How, for an exhausting Mahut-Isner length of huffing and puffing, practically every single one of the wild swings taken by Luca Guadagninoâs film missed its target and landed out by a country mile? Four-star reviews? Five-star reviews? Câmon, fellow critics. You cannot be serious.
Some points I will concede as inarguable. The film is a box-office champion. And itâs pure fire on the internet, a movie more memeable than even the sainted Saltburn. There are clear generational issues in play: I can see why excitable younger viewers, raised on a largely sexless cinema, have fallen so hard for the filmâs sprayed-on sweat and forceful faux sophistication. Itâs my senior-tour colleagues Iâm staring at with hands on hips, wearing an expression of disbelief. The film theyâve been politely applauding looks to me less a modern classic than another marker of American cinemaâs ongoing infantilisation: a Muppet Babies redo of Jules and Jim.
Possibly some spectators were swayed by the spirit of indulgence fostered by the filmâs on-screen umpire, handing out code violations as if they were candy. (In actual tennis, those breaches of court decorum have consequences: loss of whole games and matches. Not so in Luca-land.) Swallow those, and maybe youâll also overlook how neither of the filmâs male leads persuade as the whey-bulked jocks observed swaggering around Americaâs secondary tennis circuits. Even at their most drained, Art (Mike Faist) and Patrick (Josh OâConnor) resemble the gauche nerds of a thousand other teen comedies, sniggering at their own witless masturbation stories.

Non-fungible tokens (NFTs) are the most popular digital assets today, capturing the attention of cryptocurrency investors, whales and people from around the world. People find it amazing that some users spend thousands or millions of dollars on a single NFT-based image of a monkey or other token, but you can simply take a screenshot for free. So here we share some freuently asked question about NFTs.
NFT stands for non-fungible token, which is a cryptographic token on a blockchain with unique identification codes that distinguish it from other tokens. NFTs are unique and not interchangeable, which means no two NFTs are the same. NFTs can be a unique artwork, GIF, Images, videos, Audio album. in-game items, collectibles etc.
A blockchain is a distributed digital ledger that allows for the secure storage of data. By recording any kind of informationâsuch as bank account transactions, the ownership of Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs), or Decentralized Finance (DeFi) smart contractsâin one place, and distributing it to many different computers, blockchains ensure that data canât be manipulated without everyone in the system being aware.
The value of an NFT comes from its ability to be traded freely and securely on the blockchain, which is not possible with other current digital ownership solutionsThe NFT points to its location on the blockchain, but doesnât necessarily contain the digital property. For example, if you replace one bitcoin with another, you will still have the same thing. If you buy a non-fungible item, such as a movie ticket, it is impossible to replace it with any other movie ticket because each ticket is unique to a specific time and place.
One of the unique characteristics of non-fungible tokens (NFTs) is that they can be tokenised to create a digital certificate of ownership that can be bought, sold and traded on the blockchain.
As with crypto-currency, records of who owns what are stored on a ledger that is maintained by thousands of computers around the world. These records canât be forged because the whole system operates on an open-source network.
NFTs also contain smart contractsâsmall computer programs that run on the blockchainâthat give the artist, for example, a cut of any future sale of the token.
Non-fungible tokens (NFTs) aren't cryptocurrencies, but they do use blockchain technology. Many NFTs are based on Ethereum, where the blockchain serves as a ledger for all the transactions related to said NFT and the properties it represents.5) How to make an NFT?
Anyone can create an NFT. All you need is a digital wallet, some ethereum tokens and a connection to an NFT marketplace where youâll be able to upload and sell your creations
When you purchase a stock in NFT, that purchase is recorded on the blockchainâthe bitcoin ledger of transactionsâand that entry acts as your proof of ownership.
The value of an NFT varies a lot based on the digital asset up for grabs. People use NFTs to trade and sell digital art, so when creating an NFT, you should consider the popularity of your digital artwork along with historical statistics.
In the year 2021, a digital artist called Pak created an artwork called The Merge. It was sold on the Nifty Gateway NFT market for $91.8 million.
Non-fungible tokens can be used in investment opportunities. One can purchase an NFT and resell it at a profit. Certain NFT marketplaces let sellers of NFTs keep a percentage of the profits from sales of the assets they create.
Many people want to buy NFTs because it lets them support the arts and own something cool from their favorite musicians, brands, and celebrities. NFTs also give artists an opportunity to program in continual royalties if someone buys their work. Galleries see this as a way to reach new buyers interested in art.
There are many places to buy digital assets, like opensea and their policies vary. On top shot, for instance, you sign up for a waitlist that can be thousands of people long. When a digital asset goes on sale, you are occasionally chosen to purchase it.
To mint an NFT token, you must pay some amount of gas fee to process the transaction on the Etherum blockchain, but you can mint your NFT on a different blockchain called Polygon to avoid paying gas fees. This option is available on OpenSea and this simply denotes that your NFT will only be able to trade using Polygon's blockchain and not Etherum's blockchain. Mintable allows you to mint NFTs for free without paying any gas fees.
The answer is no. Non-Fungible Tokens are minted on the blockchain using cryptocurrencies such as Etherum, Solana, Polygon, and so on. Once a Non-Fungible Token is minted, the transaction is recorded on the blockchain and the contract or license is awarded to whoever has that Non-Fungible Token in their wallet.
You can sell your work and creations by attaching a license to it on the blockchain, where its ownership can be transferred. This lets you get exposure without losing full ownership of your work. Some of the most successful projects include Cryptopunks, Bored Ape Yatch Club NFTs, SandBox, World of Women and so on. These NFT projects have gained popularity globally and are owned by celebrities and other successful entrepreneurs. Owning one of these NFTs gives you an automatic ticket to exclusive business meetings and life-changing connections.
Thatâs a wrap. Hope you guys found this article enlightening. I just answer some question with my limited knowledge about NFTs. If you have any questions or suggestions, feel free to drop them in the comment section below. Also I have a question for you, Is bitcoin an NFTs? let me know in The comment section below

Hope Hicks said last week Donald Trump told her Michael Cohen paid off Stormy Daniels to protect him from a false allegation

During Hope Hicksâ testimony, Trumpâs former campaign communications director testified that the biggest concern for Trump over the hush money payments was the reaction of his wife, Melania.

Twelve months ago, carefree Belgian potter Luca Brecel struck a blow for Continental Europe but this time the winner will come from two of the gameâs dominant forces: England and Wales. From John Spencer (1977) and Ray Reardon (1978), the winners of the first two editions at the Crucible, English and Welsh players have peppered us with iconic memories at the world championship. Those multiple victories for Ronnie OâSullivan, Steve Davis and Mark Selby, Jimmy Whiteâs continuous heartbreak, Reardonâs asides to the crowd, Doug Mountjoyâs frilly red shirts, Terry Griffithsâ revelation that âIâm in the final now, you knowâ before winning as a qualifierâŠ
Ah, yes, winning as a qualifier. Thatâs what Jak Jones is also trying to achieve this week after a gutsy run to the final that took him past Zhang Anda, Si Jiahui, Judd Trump and Stuart Bingham, the latter two both former world champions. It seemed as if Jones had woken up during a bad dream when Englandâs Kyren Wilson opened with a century and raced into an eyepopping 7-0 lead on day one. But if thereâs one thing we know about Jones itâs that he doesnât lie down easily. From an ironic raised fist to the crowd after putting his first frame on the board, the 30-year-old from Cwmbran won the second session 5-4 to limit Wilsonâs overnight lead to 11-6.
That doesnât tell the whole story though. Jones looked on the brink of hitting his pillow at just 10-7 down when compiling a 64 break in the final frame of the day, leaving Wilson needing a snooker. But the Englishman found one, won a dramatic black-ball safety exchange and ensured the gap was five.
Wilson, beaten by Ronnie OâSullivan in the 2020 final, is the red-hot favourite to claim the title from here but Jones isnât the type to roll over. Can he continue the fightback in todayâs afternoon session? Weâll soon find out!

I have travelled all over Spain for both work and fun in the past two decades, but the Catalan seaside town of Cadaqués had somehow failed to register on my radar. Last year, my husband was working in Catalonia and when he had a few days off between jobs, I proposed an impromptu tryst. The brief: somewhere by the sea.
Iâm a map optimist, which can result in disappointment. Iâll spend hours tracing tantalising coastal roads, imagining wild cliffs or pristine sands dotted with charming fishing villages and chiringuitos. But the reality often fails to match my fantasies, and my dream road trip ends up leading me through Spainâs more familiar coastal milieu of endless high-rise concrete and phoney Irish bars. CadaquĂ©s, however, looked promising â a tiny dot on a Mediterranean cove at the end of a tortuous 10-mile mountain road, where the Pyrenees give way to the sea â and surrounded by pretty much nothing. So far, so good.

Volodymyr Zelenskiy urges prayers for soldiers on frontline amid attacks in Kharkiv and Sumy regions; Xi Jinping arrives in Paris under pressure to harden stance on Russia. What we know on day 803
Russian attacks on Orthodox Easter Sunday killed a woman, burying her under rubble, and injured 24 in Ukraineâs north-eastern city of Kharkiv and surrounds, regional officials said. Public broadcaster Suspilne reported power cuts in parts of Kharkiv region and in the adjacent Sumy region after reports of drone attacks and explosions. Vadim Filashkin, head of the military administration in Donetsk region, said two people were killed by shelling in the town of Pokrovsk and two injured in Chasiv Yar, west of the Russian-held town of Bakhmut.
In his Easter address, Volodymyr Zelenskiy called on Ukrainians to be âunited in one common prayerâ. Standing in front of Kyivâs Saint Sophia cathedral, Zelenskiy called on Ukrainians to pray for each other and the soldiers on the frontline. âAnd we believe: God has a chevron with the Ukrainian flag on his shoulder,â said the president, dressed in a traditional embroidered Ukrainian vyshyvanka shirt and khaki trousers. âSo with such an ally, life will definitely win over death.â A majority of Ukrainians identify as Orthodox Christians, though the church is divided. Many belong to the independent Orthodox Church of Ukraine. The rival Ukrainian Orthodox Church was loyal to the patriarch in Moscow until it split from Russia after the 2022 invasion and is viewed with suspicion by many Ukrainians.
In his Easter message, Vladimir Putin did not explicitly mention the war as he attended a Moscow Easter service led by the head of the countryâs Orthodox Church, Patriarch Kirill. Instead he thanked Kirill for âfruitful cooperation in the current difficult period, when it is so important for us to unite our efforts for the steady development and strengthening of the fatherlandâ.
Russian forces have taken control of the ruined village of Ocheretyne in Ukraineâs eastern Donetsk region, the Russian defence ministry has said. It is north-west of Avdiivka, which Russia captured in February only after huge losses of personnel and equipment. There was no comment from Ukrainian officials or the military, but unofficial Ukrainian war bloggers indicated Russia was in control of Ocheretyne, said the Reuters news agency.
In Sumy, Russian drone attacks left critical infrastructure including water supply and hospitals running on backup power, officials said on Sunday. On Monday morning, Ukraineâs air force said 13 more drones were launched by Russia over the Sumy region and air defence systems destroyed 12 of them.
Officials in Kyiv urged residents to follow Orthodox Easter services online due to safety concerns. Serhiy Popko, head of the Kyiv city administration, warned that âeven on such bright days of celebration, we can expect evil deeds from the aggressorâ.
Ukraineâs Eurovision 2016 winner, Jamala, has said her country cannot afford to boycott the song contest because it needs the opportunity to remind Europe of Russiaâs invasion. There have been calls for artists to refuse to participate over Israelâs inclusion while the war in Gaza continues. The opening round begins on Tuesday in Malmö, Sweden.
Chinaâs president, Xi Jinping, has arrived in Paris, where his French counterpart, Emmanuel Macron, will urge Xi to use his influence with Russia over the war in Ukraine. Xi has done little apart from call Volodymyr Zelenskiy, Ukraineâs president, for the first time shortly after Macron visited Beijing in 2023. âIf the Chinese seek to deepen the relationship with European partners, it is really important that they hear our point of view and start taking it seriously,â a French diplomatic source said. Xi is due on Monday to meet Macron and the European Commission chief, Ursula von der Leyen.
In an article for Le Figaro, Xi said he wanted to work with the international community to find ways to solve the conflict sparked by Russiaâs invasion of Ukraine, while claiming that China was âneither a party nor a participantâ in the conflict. âWe hope that peace and stability will return quickly to Europe and intend to work with France and the entire international community to find good paths to resolve the crisis.â
